Leander Paes, (born June 17, 1973, Goa, India) is one of those players who have given India crown after crown, and I certainly will love to pay this amazing son of India my tributes. So I started this section for these players, who are playing now, too young to be included in the tribute section but have done too much for the country to be ignored. Well it won’t be all about players, there will be others in this section too! But let me start with one of my favorite players of present time, the next one will come next month! He certainly is my “the favorite player” I will say!
As Leander’s birthday is in Jyeshtha, let us celebrate him on his birthday, eh?
Leander’s father Vece Paes is a famous, legendary tennis player of India, not only that he is descendant of a legendary Bengali poet Madhusudan Dutt.
He won the 1990 Wimbledon junior title and was briefly ranked the number one junior player in the world. Paes joined the Indian Davis Cup team in 1990 and turned professional in 1991. In 1996 when he took the men’s singles tennis bronze medal at the Atlanta Olympic Games, he became the first Indian athlete since 1952 to win an individual Olympic medal.
He and Mahesh Bhupati became partners in 1994, and climbed to the number one of ATP ranking in 1999, after that they parted their ways but Leander continued his journey to victories. There is a huge list of victories added to the list of his conquests.
He was awarded Padmashree in 2001, wonder if that was enough!
