Vishwanathan Anand like Leander Paes is one of those players who has never ever let their fans down, they have always surpassed the wildest expectations of their fans, he is quite respected in Geek circle but just like Leander Paes fans feel they have not received the recognition, respect, admiration they so so so deserve! Hey! Had I had the powers I would have awarded these two players Bharat Ratna! Because they are jewels in Mother India’s necklace, the one she wears daily!
Of course he is my “the favorite player” (P.T. Usha, Leander and Gavaskar too), you can guess it right? I know! I have been a chess addict since I was a child, and at a phase of time it was my favorite hobby to play chess with computer and I did win, don’t snigger! Now I am completely out of touch but don’t challenge! A month or two will be enough to give computer a tough time again!
Anand became India’s first grandmaster in 1988, he held the FIDE world chess championship from 2000-2002, he became indisputed world champion in 2007 and defended his title till 2013, when he lost to Magnus Carlsen.
In April 2006 Anand became the fourth player in history to pass the 2800 Elo mark [it is a method of calculating the levels of players or a two player game like chess] on the FIDE rating after Gary Kasporov, Vladimir Kramnik and Vselin Topalov, he occupied the number one position for 21 months, the 6th longest on record.
He was awarded Padma Vibhushan making him the first sportsperson to receive that honour.
