“Green Demon”

Something was wrong. Taru was trying to meditate but just could not something has gone awry in the old age home in past few months.

It started with Revati. They all liked Revati for her gentle, kind nature. She had a huge heart and was always kind, caring towards others. Her nature has changed in last few months without any apparent reason. She was withdrawing herself from everyone and sometimes she passed cross remarks at others, that was so unlike her! Gone was the heart full of love, compassion and the tongue that soothed the shattered, bruised hearts instantly.

Taru has asked her a few times but all she said was she was giving back what she was receiving that’s all.

Taru decided to do something not nice, but she wanted her friend to be happy. She got up from her mat after trying a little more to meditate without much success. She went to her bedroom and opened her cupboard. There was a small box hidden perfectly in a secret compartment of the cupboard. Only her touch opened it, it contained a beautiful ring.

She wore it on her small finger and walked out to the corridor. She was invisible now to human eyes.

Revati lived right beside her. Her door was open Taru looked inside she was sleeping. She entered the room and started looking around. There was a pile of mail on her desk. She started reading them it explained a little, they were from her family and friends outside the Home, she had quite a lot of them who kept regular contact with her. The mails were really mean, full of taunts and malice.

She placed them down on the table and looked at her sleeping friend and wondered what went wrong. She was about to walk out when someone entered the room, Tripti, one of Revati’s good friends.

She stood there and watched, Tripti went to Revati and rudely woke her up, “It’s nine in the morning!” she guffawed. “Look at you! Sleeping like a sloth. Soon you will become a bump in the bed.”

Revati woke up, an expression of very legitimate irritation. Irritation swept across her face, she never passed caustic remarks, thus was not good at receiving end either.

Tripti left, as if that was the only intention behind her visit ot her friend’s room. Ruin her mood with her caustic sense of humour.

Taru quickly followed Tripti, She was walking really fast for a sixty year old woman soon she took a turn and entered a room. Taru was about to follow her but one look inside left her frozen, absolutely transfixed to the spot.

Tripti was nowhere in the room, it was the room of one of the newest members of their old age home, Devki, she was sitting on the bed, and a strange looking demon was standing in front of her.

It was hardly three feet tall, attired in the gaudiest possible ill-fitting suit made looking even more fantastic by a pair of colourful shoes and hat.

It was nibbling on something which apparently Devki has given him.

“Good boy!” she cooed without touching him, “Now go back to work Greasy Mommy will give you more morsels when you come back with her letters.”

The creature left, Taru followed it. It headed for the reception. It stood there, the mailman delivered the mails to the desk. The creature had the power to freeze time for a few minutes it swapped the mails. The receptionist called the peon and he left with the altered mails to deliver them to their rooms.

In one week she realized by stalking that creature that it was Devki’s pet, Devki was a stunner, a very rich, beautiful and highly educated woman but very bitter and sarcastic. Her bitterness was sort of the reason behind her living in the old age home. Her family wanted no connection with her and she has been cursing them for about six months now, since they day she bought the best bungalow in the compound. That was also the time span when the troubles started.

Its sole purpose it seemed was to make Revati unpopular, the reason, the only probable reason seemed Revati’s popularity and the chances of her getting elected as their president, spokesperson that would have meant her getting a beautiful suite and a stipend from the Home authorities.

Or may be Devki was just malicious type.

That creature was invisible to everyone else but Devki and Taru. Taru’s ring gave her magical powers and she utilized them for her friend, friends. She could do everything that creature could do and more.

She observed how that creature was making Revati’s life a living hell. It swapped her mails, took form of other members of the home to squabble with her, and when she was away from the home took her form to squabble with the members. Only Taru could identify it by a faint green glint in its eyes. But she kept that a secret.

One week later she started to call all her trusted friends one by one to her room daily. It started with Revati of course.

She loaned them the ring with instructions, within a fortnight the scenario changed and after a month Revati was elected as their spokes lady unanimously.

“Weighing Bridge”

“Look at that temple!” Shubhra pointed her finger at the picturesque temple sitting right across the gorge.

“Look at that board!” Riju laughed.

“Caution: This bridge weighs it’s travelers. Step forward with a clear conscience only!”

Shubhra took a shot of the photograph before heading for the bridge, Riju followed her. She has taken barely few steps forward the bridge all of a sudden vanished.

It was sheer dumb luck that Riju was standing on firm ground and grabbed her. He could pull her back to firm ground after a hard struggle. Both were lying side by side on the brink of the sure death panting, white as sheet.

The bridge appeared suddenly like it has vanished in thin air. They both shuddered.

They scrambled back to their feet and stared at it, for a while then turned back to return to city. They were walking away when they heard the sound of flute coming from the direction of the temple.

They stopped and stared hard, a priest was walking towards the bridge, he was playing the flute, he crossed the bridge and reached this side. They both rushed to him and told him what has happened to them.

“We so wish that this bridge stayed invisible to those who can’t cross it!” The priest said, shaking his head. “You were lucky that you were absolutely unworthy of crossing that bridge! Think about those who go half way and then the bridge vanishes!”

“Heaven only knows who made this bridge and why!” he bade them goodbye and walked away.

“Eat it before it eats you!” He exclaimed loudly. “Now what the heck does that means?”

He bought this property at a dream value two months ago. It was a sturdy nice house situated in the middle of own few acres of land. That was bordered by a nice pair of lines of trees that gave it absolute privacy. Neighbours could show up but could not snoop on him from their fields, homes.

The type of house he always dreamt of, where he will wake up in lap of nature and bird calls, sometimes a rabbit or fawn will show up in his field or porch… that type of house!

It was just outside a medium sized town, so everything was peachy! The only thing was in last two years two of its owners have vanished mysteriously, without a trace!

Neighbours claim they saw them one night next morning they were gone. So, naturally supernatural crept in and buyers vanished.

The worst part was second one did not even lived in this house, he came from his house to work and return in afternoon, that evening something prevented him from returning early it seemed, and he was gone.

Well, he got all the furniture and this board as inheritance from those hapless men.

The word in the board it seemed was semi-perfectly painted by grease not paint after someone put it up in the garden, by the porch stairs. Whereas the board’s original writing were still visible through that rough work, seemed to be a nameplate.

He has been thinking about it since the day he moved in.

“Eat what?” he wondered again and went out to check the spot from where he has carried it inside to restore it. He was wondering if he will repaint it and give the house a name or just dump it in the basement and buy a new one.

There was a new plant in that spot, it was not there when he moved in a week ago. A pumpkin plant, there was a beautiful flower too, the flower was humongous. He had an irresistible urge to fry that flower and eat it that night but curiosity got the better of him and he decided he will see how big the pumpkin will be.

The plant was hybrid, the pumpkin was growing in a super speed, by the end of two days it was as big as a beach ball.

That night the sound of struggle woke him up. It was right outside his window. He picked up the shotgun and cautiously looked out, took care to stay hidden in case that serial killer was out in the garden, trying to get in.

Moonlight helped, it was bathing the entire field.

A group of rabbits were hopping around the field, nibbling on the vegetables. One of them ventured near the pumpkin plant and right in front of his terrified eyes a set of razor sharp teeth showed up, in a flurry of fur the rabbit was gone.

He could feel his hair standing up.

“Eat it before it eats you….” The warning was crystal clear now. But will it go without a fight when he shoots it tomorrow?

Next morning he shot it and he could hear its howl, full of pain and rage. He diced it and cooked it, distributed it to neighbours, could not muster up the courage to eat it himself.

From then on he ate the flowers the day they bloomed.

The penalty he had to pay for that property was he could not go anywhere, as if the vine could sense that. Once he went out for a week, when he returned half a dozen pumpkins were waiting for him, the largest one was as big as him.

It was good that the shotgun was in trunk of car and he was alone.

Oh yes, that board was back, he repainted it with his own hands and placed it right beside the seething pumpkin plant.

Form Rispetto ~ A Rispetto an Italian form which is a complete poem of two rhyming quatrains abab ccdd. Syllable count is 8 per line

Hope you will enjoy these celebrations of colours and words! I am quite hoping that!

I will love to hear from you, compliments, suggestions anything will do!

All poems and other works are copyrighted works of Sharmishtha Basu. You can share them with your friends but please acknowledge the creator. I will be very grateful for your sweetness.

A piece from the book:
That wind in my open hair
Tangling it to a knotty mess
And that attitude of don’t care
Don’t we all see that very trace?

That wild girl from novel page
Captive in every girl’s heart cage,
Scarlett O’Hara slumberin’
so eager to be born again!

Sfulingo 3, Agnijaat Annual Issue 2019

This is the third annual issue of Agnijaat! Thank you for making it happen. This year the book will share a set of brand new stories that I have not published before. Actually I edited them for this book only. So if you like my stories have fun. They are of course from my favorite genre, supernatural. Some stories are dark but most of them are lighter and more pleasant. Hope you will enjoy them and please drop me a line after reading if you can! Share your views!

A piece from the book:

He quickly clambered up the tree, moving swiftly through branches and leaves he reached the spot, a sudden stink hit him. Human odor!

Last evening, everything was fine when he came here to check out the guava, it started stinking overnight? Then he noticed the red vine like thing wrapped around its stem. That must be the job of the humans that live under the tree! They tie these vines, artificial, fake but are really good for nest. They are softer than vines or leaves. Will have to tell missus about that, she loves these colourful vines! He thought to himself.

Anyways, the guava was stinking. Last evening it smelled like heaven, he was so afraid that the parrots might get the smell and eat it before he wakes up, that is why he came up so early, after spending a restless night in his hollow.

Why do these human beings mark every good fruit in the world he wondered! He decided he will ignore that stink and eat it anyways! He approached and suddenly an ear-piercing howl belted out from under the tree, he almost fell! It was one of the smaller human beings, howling and jumping, staring right at him, throwing its sticky, huge front legs all around.

It was trying to scare him, it was quite evident. He decided to run away for now, will have to return later. He ran back to his hollow and kept an eye on the guava from there and on that little human being too.

It displayed its teeth when he ran away. He knew that meant it was happy. Next it went to a bigger human being and after much throwing its limbs and babbling for long, long time settled down to eat. After some time it went inside their cave, changed its skin and came out.

Next it left the cave and went away.

He sneaked out of his hollow, looked around, none of the human were around, they were all inside their cave, he quickly went to the guava, ate as much as he could and carried a huge portion back to his hollow. He knew that the little human will return when the sun is half way down the western sky. Then it will eat the rest.

He must have snoozed, a howl woke him up, it was a familiar howl. He took a peek from behind the branches. It was throwing its limbs and jumping, screaming something in human lingo.

The bigger human being was listening to it, saying things in a softer tone but it was just howling and howling. Then it got tired and went back to cave, without even touching the guava.

Good! He thought, that meant tomorrow’s brunch! If the parrots don’t get there first! The fruit was delicious! He licked his lips. Now, will have to tell missus about the vine after finishing the fruit, otherwise she will eat the fruit when she gathers the vine for nest.

Human beings and their marking everything that they think they own! Bah! He fell asleep, hiding his little face in his fluffy, soft tail.
