“Green Demon”

Something was wrong. Taru was trying to meditate but just could not something has gone awry in the old age home in past few months.

It started with Revati. They all liked Revati for her gentle, kind nature. She had a huge heart and was always kind, caring towards others. Her nature has changed in last few months without any apparent reason. She was withdrawing herself from everyone and sometimes she passed cross remarks at others, that was so unlike her! Gone was the heart full of love, compassion and the tongue that soothed the shattered, bruised hearts instantly.

Taru has asked her a few times but all she said was she was giving back what she was receiving that’s all.

Taru decided to do something not nice, but she wanted her friend to be happy. She got up from her mat after trying a little more to meditate without much success. She went to her bedroom and opened her cupboard. There was a small box hidden perfectly in a secret compartment of the cupboard. Only her touch opened it, it contained a beautiful ring.

She wore it on her small finger and walked out to the corridor. She was invisible now to human eyes.

Revati lived right beside her. Her door was open Taru looked inside she was sleeping. She entered the room and started looking around. There was a pile of mail on her desk. She started reading them it explained a little, they were from her family and friends outside the Home, she had quite a lot of them who kept regular contact with her. The mails were really mean, full of taunts and malice.

She placed them down on the table and looked at her sleeping friend and wondered what went wrong. She was about to walk out when someone entered the room, Tripti, one of Revati’s good friends.

She stood there and watched, Tripti went to Revati and rudely woke her up, “It’s nine in the morning!” she guffawed. “Look at you! Sleeping like a sloth. Soon you will become a bump in the bed.”

Revati woke up, an expression of very legitimate irritation. Irritation swept across her face, she never passed caustic remarks, thus was not good at receiving end either.

Tripti left, as if that was the only intention behind her visit ot her friend’s room. Ruin her mood with her caustic sense of humour.

Taru quickly followed Tripti, She was walking really fast for a sixty year old woman soon she took a turn and entered a room. Taru was about to follow her but one look inside left her frozen, absolutely transfixed to the spot.

Tripti was nowhere in the room, it was the room of one of the newest members of their old age home, Devki, she was sitting on the bed, and a strange looking demon was standing in front of her.

It was hardly three feet tall, attired in the gaudiest possible ill-fitting suit made looking even more fantastic by a pair of colourful shoes and hat.

It was nibbling on something which apparently Devki has given him.

“Good boy!” she cooed without touching him, “Now go back to work Greasy Mommy will give you more morsels when you come back with her letters.”

The creature left, Taru followed it. It headed for the reception. It stood there, the mailman delivered the mails to the desk. The creature had the power to freeze time for a few minutes it swapped the mails. The receptionist called the peon and he left with the altered mails to deliver them to their rooms.

In one week she realized by stalking that creature that it was Devki’s pet, Devki was a stunner, a very rich, beautiful and highly educated woman but very bitter and sarcastic. Her bitterness was sort of the reason behind her living in the old age home. Her family wanted no connection with her and she has been cursing them for about six months now, since they day she bought the best bungalow in the compound. That was also the time span when the troubles started.

Its sole purpose it seemed was to make Revati unpopular, the reason, the only probable reason seemed Revati’s popularity and the chances of her getting elected as their president, spokesperson that would have meant her getting a beautiful suite and a stipend from the Home authorities.

Or may be Devki was just malicious type.

That creature was invisible to everyone else but Devki and Taru. Taru’s ring gave her magical powers and she utilized them for her friend, friends. She could do everything that creature could do and more.

She observed how that creature was making Revati’s life a living hell. It swapped her mails, took form of other members of the home to squabble with her, and when she was away from the home took her form to squabble with the members. Only Taru could identify it by a faint green glint in its eyes. But she kept that a secret.

One week later she started to call all her trusted friends one by one to her room daily. It started with Revati of course.

She loaned them the ring with instructions, within a fortnight the scenario changed and after a month Revati was elected as their spokes lady unanimously.
